304 vs 316L vs 2205 Stainless Steel Tubes: How to Choose
A procurement comparison of 304, 316L, and 2205 stainless steel tubes for fluid, sanitary, heat exchange, corrosion-resistant, and OEM projects.
The Short Answer
304 is often reviewed for general stainless tube use, 316L is commonly reviewed for more corrosion-sensitive or hygienic service, and 2205 duplex stainless steel is considered when chloride exposure, strength, or demanding corrosion resistance becomes more important.
The correct choice depends on the working medium, temperature, cleaning method, chloride exposure, downstream welding, documentation requirements, and customer specification.
Grade Comparison
| Grade | Typical Review Direction | Buyer Should Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 304 | General stainless tube applications | Medium, temperature, finish, cost target, and project standard |
| 316L | Hygienic, fluid, and more corrosion-sensitive service | Cleaning chemicals, chloride exposure, surface finish, and documentation |
| 2205 duplex | More demanding chloride or strength requirements | Chloride level, working temperature, stress, welding, and inspection scope |
Where Each Grade Usually Appears
For food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or clean-process work, buyers often compare 304 and 316L with Sanitary Tube or Fluid Conveyor Pipe. For thermal equipment, grade choice should be reviewed with Heat Exchanger Tube requirements. For offshore, petrochemical, shipbuilding, power, or chloride-sensitive projects, review 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Welded Tube.
Cost Should Not Be the Only Factor
Selecting the cheapest grade can create risk if the service environment is more aggressive than expected. Selecting the highest grade without need can also increase cost. A good RFQ should define the service environment so the quotation reflects the real requirement.
What to Send Before Quotation
Send material preference, application, working medium, temperature range, chloride exposure, cleaning method, OD, wall thickness, length, surface finish, inspection requirements, and quantity. If the customer has a written specification, include the relevant grade and acceptance notes.
