Start with the Application
Stainless steel tube material selection should start with the working environment, not only the grade name. A tube for an automotive exhaust route, a clean fluid line, a sanitary system, or a heat exchanger can require different grade, surface, inspection, and packaging decisions.

Common Grade Review
304 is often reviewed for general stainless tube applications where the environment is moderate and the buyer’s specification allows it. 316L is commonly reviewed for cleaner fluid, hygienic, or more corrosion-sensitive service. 409L is often considered in exhaust programs, while 2205 duplex stainless steel is considered for higher corrosion or strength requirements.
The final grade should follow the buyer’s specification, operating medium, temperature, corrosion exposure, downstream welding, cleaning method, and documentation needs.

Avoid Over-specifying and Under-specifying
Over-specifying can increase cost without improving performance for simple applications. Under-specifying can create corrosion, fit, or documentation problems in critical projects. Buyers should share the real service environment and target market so the quotation can be reviewed against the actual project.
RFQ Preparation
Send material grade, OD, wall thickness, length, surface finish, application, medium, cleaning method, temperature range, inspection requirements, and order quantity. If a customer specification controls the order, include the relevant standard or drawing notes with the RFQ.
