Common Inspection Points for Custom Formed Stainless Steel Tubes
A practical inspection guide for custom formed stainless steel tubes, profiled tubes, flared bends, automotive exhaust parts, and drawing-based OEM components.
Inspection Should Follow the Drawing
Custom formed stainless steel tube inspection should begin with the drawing, sample, or approved specification. The most important inspection points are usually the dimensions that affect assembly, fit, sealing, appearance, or downstream processing.
For non-round sections, review Profiled Tube and Elliptical Tube. For expanded ends and routed components, review Flared Pipe Bend. For exhaust routing or fabricated parts, review Auto-exhaust Pipe and Mechanical Pipe.
Key Inspection Points
| Inspection Area | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | OD, wall thickness, length, profile width, height, corner radius, and critical fit points |
| Bend geometry | Bend angle, bend radius, centerline dimension, orientation, and springback-sensitive areas |
| End form | Flared end, reduced end, cut angle, burr condition, end roundness, and mating fit |
| Surface finish | Scratches, dents, discoloration, handling marks, polishing, brushing, or visible surface quality |
| Weld condition | Weld appearance, consistency, and any project-defined weld acceptance points |
| Packaging | Surface protection, bundle method, labels, carton or crate method, and shipping marks |
Mark Critical Dimensions
Not every dimension has the same functional importance. Buyers should mark key fit dimensions, mating surfaces, and inspection focus points on the drawing. This helps the supplier understand where closer checking is needed.
If a sample controls the part, clarify whether the sample is a visual reference, a fit reference, or the final acceptance basis.
Surface and Handling
Custom formed tubes are often used in visible assemblies, handles, guards, equipment components, exhaust parts, or special interfaces. Surface protection and packaging should be discussed before production if appearance matters.
Documentation
If inspection records, material documents, photos, labels, or packing lists are required, request them before quotation. Documentation requirements can affect production planning, inspection time, and order handling.
